Moderate response was witnessed to rythu porubata launched by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu in the district on Wednesday.
Tens of TDP activists took part in the Porubata, but there was no active participation of farmers, more particularly at the public meeting held at Machilipatnam. During his 15-km padayatra that was kicked off at Nadupuru village near here, Mr. Naidu interacted with very few farmers to ascertain their miseries. On the occasion, he slammed the State Government for not responding to farmers' plight. The TDP would continue fight against the government's anti-farmer policies, he said, adding, “My vision is to see happy farmers and poverty-free society.” The TDP Government purchased the discoloured paddy when farmers suffered losses in 2003. But, the Congress government had not taken any initiative to rescue the farmer who suffered huge losses due to cyclones and untimely heavy rains. The government should procure the discoloured paddy, and announce a compensation of at least Rs. 10,000 for black gram farmers who lost their crop due to heavy rains, he said.
