A total of 1,000 city police personnel, who underwent training in yoga, gave a demonstration on completion of their course at the Police Stadium here on Saturday.

The dignitaries who attended the programme were all praise for Police Commissioner J. Purnachandra Rao for initiating the training course for his men to help them lose weight, overcome stress, and lead a better lifestyle.

Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust Ajeya Kallam said he had also introduced an ‘Art of Living' course, but the response from the employees was far from encouraging. He appreciated the good work of the Police Commissioner in impressing upon his men to participate in the yoga classes and benefit from the same.

Nutrition course

The port Chairman felt that a course on nutrition should be introduced at the graduate level so that students could have greater understanding on having a balanced diet.

Andhra Medical College principal Santa Rao said yoga could relieve mental tensions that had become the order of the day in most professions. The concept of a balanced diet was also useful for weight management. He hoped that police chiefs in other districts would also take a cue from the Commissioner's initiative.

Subrahmanyam, endocrinologist of AMC, expressed astonishment on seeing the laboratory results of the trainees. Dr. Subrahmanyam said he had interacted with around 40 personnel who underwent training and was surprised to know that each had lost between 5 kg and 7 kg of body weight and the sugar levels were well under control.

K. Suman of Vijaya Medical Centre expressed satisfaction at the lab results. Dr. Suman lauded the trainees for being regular to the course and deriving the maximum benefit.

Yoga guru Ch. Venkata Ramana said yoga was all about controlling the breath and having a balanced diet. It was a way to good health and had nothing to do with religion.

“My dream has come true,” said a visibly happy Mr. Purnachandra Rao. He commended his men for sticking to the schedule.
