They hold ‘Jana Mytri Sanghalu' meetings with village elders

The district police, particularly the Urban district police, have swung into action to stop cockfights during Sankranti season in the district.

It may be recalled that cockfights were organised in almost all the places in the district, including Mandapeta, Korukonda, Gokavaram, Tuni, Jaggampeta, Kattipudi, Pitapuram, Peddapuram and Rangampeta areas.

In Konaseema villages alone, collections through cockfights in the last three days of Sankranti will run into crores of rupees.

The police have convened the regular meetings of ‘Jana Mythri Sanghalu' from the first week of January involving the elders of the village to check cockfights and gambling.

Such one meeting was organised at Kavalagoyya village in Rajahmundry rural on Sunday in which DSP-East, Rural CI and Bommuru SI participated. The police officials asked the villagers not to entertain such activities like gambling, cockfighting in the village during Sankranti festival.

They cautioned the villagers about the action to be initiated against them by the police.

P. Umapati, Urban SP, said as far as urban district was concerned he will not allow any cockfight this year and stringent action would be taken against organisers as well as participants.
