Harnessing information technology in curbing crime, the Prakasam police have roped in hotels in the town to put in place the Visitors Information Monitoring System (VIMS).
Giving a demonstration on the VIMS to the owners and representatives of the hotel industry at the District Police Office (DPO) here on Monday, Superintendent of Police K. Raghuram Reddy explained that the VIMS would help the hotels easily monitor guests, who checked in day in and day out and help curb property offences, serious crimes within the hotel and nab those behind offences elsewhere taking shelter in hotels.
The hotel owners should have to install a web camera at the reception counter to record the movement of guests and visitors for use in the event of any untoward incident. A software would be installed in hotels so that the pictures of the visitors taken would be integrated with the central database at the DPO through internet, Dr. Reddy said.
The system would be monitored and maintained by the IT core team of the DPO. An SMS would be sent to the mobile phones given by the guests to check their authenticity, he said.
“We want the VIMS to be installed in all hotels before the next round of by-elections in the State to monitor the movement of outsiders and prevent any distribution of money by them,” he added.
