GUNTUR: Nallamalla forest region, spreading from south western parts of Guntur to Prakasam, Mahboobnagar, Kurnool and Kadapa districts, was a safe hiding place for the Maoists and the police see a possibility of their cadres taking shelter here.
After having struck a major blow in Chattisgarh on Thursday, the Maoists could find this a safe zone to hide, so police were taking all possible measures to check the entry of Maoists to this region, while being on the guard.
In view of council elections in Guntur utmost care would be taken to ensure that no untoward incident took place in the Maoists-affected mandals. Guntur Superintendent of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy said all the police personnel in the target zone had been asked to be in a state of high alert now and not move out alone for any purpose as snipe attack was possible at any time. Security at all police stations in the district had been stepped up and guarding of arms was being given priority. All sarpanches, mandal and zilla Parishad territorial constituency members and political functionaries had been cautioned against moving in Maoists-prone areas and all the MLAs from the district coming here on Saturdays and Sunday had also been asked to be on high alert.
