Party planned agitation on Quattrocchi issue

HYDERABAD: Over two dozen BJP leaders and members including office-bearers of the legal cell, Ramchander Rao and Anthony Reddy, were picked up by police outside the State party office here on Saturday as they were about to stage a protest against de-freezing assets of arms dealer Quattrocchi's.

Police informed the BJP leaders that prohibitory orders under Section 144 were in force. The arrests took place before Himayatnagar MLA G. Kishan Reddy arrived on the scene. He told the media that the act amounted to stifling the voice of democracy. Just because the AICC plenary sessions were going on, it did not mean others should not lodge protest.

In another incident, a protest by TSS against "moral turpitude" of the Congress on the issue of a separate Telangana, was thwarted by police because they had not obtained permission. An hour before their protest police entered the scene and pulled away banners and the tent they had erected on the road. Among those present were the general secretary, T. Ganesh Rao.
