Union Minister promises comprehensive rehabilitation and resettlement package
Reiterating that the multi-purpose Polavaram project would benefit Seemandhra as well as Telangana, Union Minister of Rural Development Jairam Ramesh said that the interests of all the 45,000 families to be displaced by the project would be fully protected.
About 45,000 families will have to be relocated for construction of the project. Of this, 35,000 families hail from Khammam district.
The land oustees will get adequate compensation under the New Land Acquisition Act. A comprehensive rehabilitation and resettlement package will be implemented in letter and spirit. They will be moved only after creation of the requisite infrastructure at the rehabilitation sites, he said.
Mr Ramesh conducted road shows in Madhira and Khammam Assembly constituencies on Tuesday to muster support for the party candidates in the elections.
Earlier, speaking to mediapersons along with Rajya Sabha member Renuka Chowdary he said the AP Reorganisation Act envisaged construction of the project by the Central government. The Centre will bear 90 per cent of the expenditure of the Polavaram project.
Merger of mandals
The Union Cabinet has decided to merge a few mandals in the Polavaram submergence zone in the district with East Godavari district, keeping in view the connectivity problems and to facilitate the resettlement of the land oustees in their respective mandals.
However, an ordinance to this effect could not be issued due to the election model code of conduct, he said in reply to a question.
As of now, only the revenue villages falling under the Polavaram submergence area have been earmarked for transfer to the successor State of Andhra Pradesh as per the AP Reorganisation Bill, he said in response to another query.
He said the Congress-CPI combine would secure more than 65 seats and form the government in Telangana. A secular government headed by the Congress will be at the helm of affairs at the Centre after the general elections, he said.
Steel plant at Bayyaram
A steel plant in the public sector will be set up at Bayyaram and a mining university established in the district after a Congress-led government comes to power in Telangana. The number of districts will be doubled from the present 10 to 20 in the new Telangana State.
Mr Ramesh alleged that TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao had earned notoriety for backtracking from his statements and encouraging nepotism and family rule.
