TIRUPATI: Fishermen and fish traders on Saturday expressed deep concern over their fate in the context of the government letting the corporate giant Reliance enter even the fish trade.
They strongly criticised the State and the Central governments for their callous attitude towards the livelihood of the small and marginal traders, small farmers and rural artisans.
State general secretary of the AP Fishermen’s Association, L. Balakrishna called upon the government to take steps to provide exclusive shopping area for fish-traders and wanted basic minimum amenities like bath-rooms, toilets, dormitory ,drinking etc provided at the shopping areas.
The lack of these facilities at the Tirupati fish market recently opened at the Leela Mahal junction has come in for a criticism. The meeting also criticised the authorities for allotting shops only to 15 against 20 actually identified.
State leader of the association, Aruna wanted the government to entrust the task of running the fish markets to women societies.
