In order to protect the minor irrigation tanks from encroachment and also provide employment to the farm labourers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), the district administration has embarked upon an ambitious task of taking up massive plantation along the catchment areas of the tanks and lakes.

Accordingly, the District Water Management Agency (DWMA) had chalked out strategies to protect at least 76 minor irrigation tanks and take up plantation of 6.43 lakh saplings in 1450 acres of land in the district.

The respective villages Shramshakthi groups would entrusted the job of plantation and protection of saplings.

In a press note here on Tuesday, Collector Smita Sabharwal said that the land surveyors were instructing to mark the boundaries of the tanks and lakes.

She said that they would conduct grama sabhas and discuss about the protection of saplings planted to protect the tanks and lakes from encroachment. She said that they had identified 21 tanks in Sircilla division, 16 tanks in Peddapalli division, 14 tanks in Jagtial, 12 tanks in Karimnagar and 13 tanks in Manthani division.
