Author-columnist Shobhaa De addresses people at ‘Pink Ribbon Evening 2010'
Breast cancer, one among life's challenges, especially for urban women, has inspired considerable social action from those who confronted it personally, said well-known author-columnist Shobhaa De.
Addressing a gathering of surgeons, breast cancer survivors, and socialites at the ‘Pink Ribbon Evening 2010' hosted by the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation (UBF) in association with KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases here on Sunday, Ms. De said it was always personal experience that touched one's heart, though the disease had been referred to often in the public domain.
Drawing instances from Dr. Geeta Pandya, who penned a book about the disease 20 years after she survived it, Namrata Singh Gujral, the India-born actor-director who made a film on breast cancer ‘1 a minute', and the president of UBF, P.Raghuram, who had witnessed his mother struggle with the malady, Ms. De said personal experience inspired them all to become change agents in terms of fighting the disease.
On the occasion, Dr.Raghuram announced the formation of the Association of Breast Surgeons of India as a section of the Association of Surgeons of India, which will become functional from next year. CEO of KIMS N.Bhaskar Rao took the occasion to announce 50 per cent concession on mammography and surgical procedure for breast cancer patients referred to the hospital for the coming one month.
