CPI (M) secretary B. V. Raghavulu has requested the Chief Minister to provide permanent employment to the washermen community in Tirupati by assigning the work of cleaning and pressing of clothes of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and the four hospitals funded by it.
In a letter written to the Chief Minister on Friday, Mr. Raghavulu found fault with the TTD for giving away the work to a Mumbai-based private agency.
The TTD’s decision would render injustice to the local washermen communities who had been doing free service of holding torches, carrying palanquins, white washing, laying fabric during the sacred rituals and others for generations together.
By engaging a private agency for the washing work the TTD had not only snatched the employment opportunity of the local washermen families but had made them wage-workers in their own profession, the CPI (M) leader sasid.
The families from the washermen community used to be given the work by the TTD in the past, but it was stopped a few years ago.
