Radiation causing cancer, allege residents
Residents of Machilipatnam are up in arms against the cell phone towers set up in the town. They alleged that many people were suffering from cancer due to the installation of towers in the vicinity of their houses.
CPI (M) district secretary R. Raghu, along with the patients suffering from cancer, addressing a press conference here on Thursday, said that the towers had hit the lives worst.
The people were suffering from a host of cancers, including, blood cancer, throat cancer, uterus cancer, chest cancer, bone cancer etc.
A host of ailments
Heart ailments, mental illness were some of the problems faced by the public, he said.
The residents brought the issue to the notice of officials concerned but in vain.
As if the situation not bad enough the concentration of towers is very high in some localities.
The officials have not responded though the representations were given five times. The municipal officials have washed off their hands saying that the ‘no objection certificate’ from the residents was not mandatory.
CPI(M) plans stir
They also passed the buck to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited saying it was duty of the BSNL to check the radiation levels, he said, adding, the CPI(M) would launch a massive agitation if necessary action was not taken against the towers’ owners.
