'Move will deny the poor access to higher education'
Proposed move will strengthen privatisation of educationStudents urged to oppose globalisation policies
ONGOLE: Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) has opposed inclusion of education in GATS as it would pave the way for privatisation and globalisation of education and deny poor people access to education.
Addressing a meeting of district unit of PDSU here on Friday, the State unit president C.S. Sagar said that the inclusion will help foreigners to start universities, colleges and educational institutions in our country.
It would weaken education under Government control and strengthen privatisation of education. It would deny access to higher education to poor people.
He pointed out that education was seriously affected in Mexico and Philippines due to restrictions imposed by GATS.
He feared that the private entrepreneurs will introduce courses to meet their market needs without any consideration for national interests. New universities will not help spread education.
PDSU State committee member R. Mohan spoke on globalisation and unemployment. He said that globalisation and liberalisation policies helped multinationals invade all sectors.
The number of unemployed swelled to 30 lakhs in the country by 1997.
He called upon the students to oppose globalisation policies.
