The green drive launched by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), Nellore, has helped in the promotion of clay idols of Ganesh here with many devotees purchasing them in various sizes in the local market.
The idol hawkers in the streets started selling clay idols also in tune with the rising demand for the same from the general public. The prices of these idols are put at Rs. 15 to Rs. 50 depending on the size.
Meanwhile, the APPCB opened outlets for free distribution of clay idols at the rythu bazaar, Fatehkhanpeta and the Nellore Municipal Corporation office premises. APPCB environmental engineer V.R. Maheswara Rao said that the clay idol distribution was taken up at all the municipalities in the district as part of the green drive.
The residential association members erected a 36-ft idol at Balajinagar where the devotees wanted to celebrate the Ganesh Chaturthi in a grand manner. The idols made of plaster of paris and synthetic colours continued to be sold on the roadsides at Mini Bypass Road and near Vedayapalem in the city. Ganesh pandals came up at important areas in the town.
