The corporation has to pay a total of Rs. 7.7 crore salaries to 3,400 workers

VIJAYAWADA:The city unit of CPI(M) has demanded that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) pay salaries to municipal workers immediately.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, CPI(M) Floor leader in VMC general body Ch. Babu Rao said that the corporation had not paid salaries to teachers, DWCUA and CMEY group members and contract workers for last two months.

The corporation had to pay a total of Rs. 7.7 crore salaries to 3,400 workers belonging to DWCUA and CMEY groups, 650 teachers and 450 contract workers employed in UGD and water supply works, he said.

The VMC was not paying the salaries to the teachers since February. Similarly, the DWCUA and CMEY members were not paid salaries since April.

Dues to teachers

While the dues to the teachers were Rs. 4 crores, the dues to the DWCUA and CMEY group members were estimated to be more than Rs.4.5 crores.

The salaries of contract workers would be around Rs. 70 lakhs, he said.

Mr. Babu Rao said that the corporation was collecting huge amounts as penalty from the people if water cess and other taxes were not paid in time.

And, in some cases, it was resorting to seizure of properties.

Will it pay interest on salaries that were due to its employees, he asked.
