Jaipal Reddy lauds the party's role in freedom struggle

HYDERABAD: Union Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy has complimented the secular policies of Congress, which facilitated integration of the country.

Addressing a meeting organised on the occasion of the anniversary of martyrdom of Hemu Kalani who was hanged in Sakhar jail during the Quit India movement in 1943, Mr. Reddy said the Congress played a constructive role in the freedom struggle. That was why India got liberated from British rule and followed the path of development. He described the Gujarat riots as the only major challenge to secular politics in free India.

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Meira Kumar, said the good elements of armed struggle and satyagraha were incorporated in the freedom struggle launched by Hemu Kalani.

Hike in pensions

Union Minister of State for Home, Manikrao H. Gavit, said the UPA Government took up several welfare measures for freedom fighters, the latest being hike in their pensions by Rs. 1,000 a month.

The meeting was organised at the Gandhi Bhavan by Freedom Fighters Federation, Vandemataram Centenary Celebrations Committee and the Freedom Movement Memorial Committee.

An exhibition of stamps on Mahatma Gandhi released by 85 countries was organised.
