Opposition parties are trying to highlight issue of compensation to oustees, Congress planning to announce package that is acceptable to affected families

KARIMNAGAR: Come elections and it is time for politicians to take up each and every issue to gain political mileage. Now the execution of Mid Manair Dam (MMD) reservoir in Manwada village of Bionpally mandal in the district has become an issue in the Karimnagar bypoll.

Though, Opposition parties are highlighting the issue of compensation to the project oustees, the Government is trying to turn it in its favour by announcing a package that is acceptable to the affected families.

Plans deferred

The MMD reservoir was planned as part of the Sriramsagar project (SRSP) Flood Flow Canal to irrigate 2 lakh acres in upland areas. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajashekhara Reddy had decided to lay the foundation stone for the project on November 12, but deferred his plans after the election notification was issued.

About 18 villages and 15,000 acres will be submerged after the reservoir is built. However, Sircilla and Choppadandi Assembly constituencies, both upland areas, will be transformed on its completion. Nerella Assembly segment, also an upland region, will get irrigation as the Government has sanctioned a scheme to lift water MMD to Upper Manair Dam.

Political parties have been demanding payment of Rs. 4-5 lakh an acre as compensation to oustees. Leaders of the Joint Action Committee of MMD land oustees have suggested that the Government provide compensation of Rs. 2.5 lakhs an acre for land where two crops are grown, Rs. 2.1 lakh for single crop land, Rs. 1.75 lakh an acre for rain-fed landand Rs. 400 per square yard for house sites. Majority of villagers have decided to support Congress in the elections as they expect the it to remain in power.
