Seeking to clear doubts being expressed in various quarters, Panchayat Raj Minister K. Jana Reddy has said the elections to Panchayat Raj bodies -- gram panchayats, mandal praja parishads and zilla parishads -- will be held towards June-end with a provision for reservation to listed categories.

He said the exercise to provide reservation at the specified percentage to these listed sections—Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward classes, would be completed in 15 days, preparing the ground for the long-awaited elections.

Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, Mr Jana Reddy clarified that while it was the responsibility of the Government to specify the reservation percentage for each of the listed categories, it would be the State Election Commission which would issue the necessary notification for conduct of the elections to the three-tier Panchayat raj institutions in the state. He said as per the present formulations, backward classes would be provided a 34 per cent reservation, Scheduled Castes 18.30 per cent and Scheduled Tribes 8.25 per cent, the overall working out to 60.55 per cent.

The Minister, however, said the percentage levels might undergo slight alterations in case of SCs and STs if the Census authorities issued the gazette notification, providing panchayat-wise population details of the 2011 Census about these sections. If these authorities did not come out with the gazette notification, the elections would be held based on 2001 Census.
