Over one lakh voters exercised their franchise in the elections held to the 46 cooperative societies here on Thursday.

Of the 49 societies in three revenue divisions – Mahabubabad, Narasampet and Mulug, there was unanimous election in three societies while 46 societies went for polling on Thursday.

Of the total 635 posts of directors to the societies, 83 were elected unopposed while elections were held to 552 posts, for which 1,650 candidates contested. According to the claims of political parties, the Congress bagged 20, TDP got eight, TRS got two and BJP bagged one, while the counting was still going at 10 societies when the last reports came in.

Staff Reporter adds: District Collector Christina Z. Chongthu said that in the first phase of elections, everything went off peacefully in the 61 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) and elections were held for 561 territorial constituencies in 61 PACS limits. An average of 85 per cent of voters cast their votes in the district.

Earlier in the day, she visited Borgam, Badsi and Mopal and observed the counting process.

She also visited the polling booths at some villages in Nandipet, Navipet, Yedapally mandals and also at Makloor mandal headquarters and inspected the voting situation from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. She checked whether the election staff was in possession of the lists of voters identified by the Election Commission.

If the authorities were found to not have the lists, she questioned as to what means they were using to allow voters to cast their votes. She strictly warned the election staff not to allow any voter coming after 2 p.m.

Staff Reporter writes: The first phase of the cooperative elections was held peacefully in Medak district with no major untoward incident taking place.

At Toopran the polling was delayed by about 30 minutes as supporters of Congress and TDP clashed with each other. Later, the polling resumed with police intervention.

Polling at Chandampet in Chinnashankarampet mandal commenced with a one-hour delay as some of the polling staff reportedly arrived in the morning instead of the previous night.

Correspondent adds: In the elections to 43 cooperative societies under the first phase, 16 emerged as hung while the ruling Congress party bagged 11 societies.

YSRC won nine societies and Telugu Desam won six while TRS managed to win just one society. They said that out of 1,26,657 voters, over 85,000 exercised their franchise, which recorded at 79.34 poll per cent.

Staff Reporter writes: The Congress party had a sway during the first phase of cooperative elections held in the district by winning majority of the director posts and making way to snatch at least 40 primary agricultural cooperative societies (PACS) in Karimnagar district on Thursday.

The polling for the election of directors for PACS was held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the counting started immediately. Though elections should have been held for 72 societies, positions for eight societies were elected unanimously and authorities conducted elections to 64 societies on Thursday.

TRS won 14 societies, TDP and YSRC four societies each, while BJP, CPI one society each in the elections.
