Superintendent of Police, Government Railway Police, Vijayawada district (region), Ch. Shyam Prasad, has said that all mobile teams have been ordered to shoot on sight anyone indulging in dacoity on trains.

Speaking to mediapersons after addressing GRP staff hailing from Palasa to Vijayawada here on Saturday, Mr. Prasad said special teams had been constituted with four armed constables for each train and two mobile teams comprising 10 constables. Route officers of the rank of DSP would visit all railway stations. An SI would stay put in the sub control-room to be set up exclusively in big stations keeping in mind the thefts and dacoities usually committed during summer months.

“The GRP staff will be held responsible for incidents of theft or dacoity on trains,” he warned. Police beats would be increased in the district, he said, and added that 300 constables had been recruited recently.

Stating that 15,000 persons had lost their lives last year either while crossing the railway track or undertaking footboard travel, Mr. Prasad said the toll in Vijayawada district alone was 5,000.

Mr. Prasad said recovery of stolen property was only 26 per cent last year. It was targeted to achieve 80 per cent this year, he added.

Two days ago, a Bihar gang indulging in stealing suitcases was busted and 500 kg gold belonging to a passenger from Bhimavaram was recovered from it, the police official said.
