VIZIANAGARAM: Opposition parties, while demanding that the Government scrap GOs 271, 272, 274 and 238, have threatened to launch an agitation and called upon sarpanches, MPTCs and ZPTCs, notwithstanding party affiliation to join in their protest. The Telugu Desam Party, district committee, has decided to stage a dharna at the Collector’s office on Friday in this regard.
At a round table convened by the TDP here on Thursday, TDP district president Y. Ramana Murty said the GOs were issued to favour Congress workers in panchayats. He said that the Government had in the past released Rs. 90 lakhs for each mandal to benefit Congress workers, now it was decided to release Rs. 1200 crores i.e. Rs. 1.25 crores for each mandal through district in-charge Minister for various development works in villages. This would mean that Minister for Panchayat Raj Botcha Satyanarayana was trying to dilute powers of sarpanches when they were agitating for transfer of powers under 73rd and 74th amendments. He demanded that the GOs be scrapped, responsibility assigned as per guidelines drafted under NREGP to sarpanches, MPTCs, MPPs and ZPTCs.
CPI(M) district secretary M. Krishna Murty said irregularities in NREGP works were detected. No eligible family in the district was employed for more than 45 days in a year, he said.
CPI secretary P. Kameswara Rao said the government was trying to enrich Congress workers though the GOs. B.A. Babji of Lok Satta, M. Appala Naidu of Praja Rajyam and K. Sanyasi Rao (CPI ML-New Democracy) too opposed the GOs.
