Residents use metal causeways to cross the drain

Hyderabad: Civic conditions at Baghdad Colony in Langar Houz have gone for a toss, literally. Over the past few months, residents have braved a lot of difficulties owing to an open drain in the area. Moreover, most of the residents staying in front of the wide-open nala, cross it using metal causeways from their homes.

The nala, until one-and-a-half years ago was about 6 feet wide where in drain water from Jubilee Hills, Towli Chowki and areas along the way were diverted to Langar Houz lake. In due course of time, residents revealed that it was widened by the GHMC.

Mosquito menace

“The authorities concerned promised to cover the open drain with cement slabs so that we could walk out of our homes. But the construction was stopped abruptly, leaving us in a tight spot. Most of us have installed metal ramps from our homes to cross this massive open drain. There are a lot of mosquitoes in the area due to the drain, especially in the evenings,” complains Mohammed Ali Junaid, who has been living in Bagdad colony for 10 years.

A lot of garbage and empty plastic bottles are seen floating with the current and some complain that commuters often throw garbage bags into the drain. Moreover, the overpowering stench emanating from it has passers-by covering their noses. Also with a school in the vicinity, students are seen walking on the edge of the nala unaware of the danger.

Defunct streetlights

“People are always on the lookout and have been warning children not to walk on the edge of the nala. Adding to these problems, many of the street lights in the area are defunct,” says another resident. “The real danger is when people are unaware of the open drain and walk in the area,” he adds.

The past few months have seen residents of Baghdad Colony waiting for the work to be completed. However, as days pass by, their patience is running out as they are forced to live in such dire conditions.
