A contract health worker suffered injuries after a portion of the false ceiling caved-in at the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) ward in Government Chest Hospital, Erragadda on Thursday.

Hospital authorities said that the health worker received minor head injuries and was discharged after being treated at the outpatient.

The incident occurred when the worker was entering the RICU ward.

Hospital officials suspect that the recent rains might have led to the incident.

The spot of the mishap was at a safe distance from the block where patients were undergoing treatment.

Declared unsafe

In 2010, the GHMC had already declared the old hospital building as unsafe for occupation.

The hospital authorities said that the first floor was already vacated to ensure the safety of patients.

Insufficient funds

Sources said that the hospital does not have enough funds to take up construction of a new building to house its patients.

The government on its part has delayed the release of Rs. 180 crore to construct a general hospital in the 65-acre land, forcing doctors to manage patients in the dilapidated building.

There is a demand from the hospital authorities that the government sell a piece of land from the existing premises to fund the construction of a new hospital building.
