HYDERABAD: A nursery student, Mohd. Asif Khan, being taken to school by his father on a bicycle was crushed to death by a lorry in an interior road of the old city at Uppuguda on Wednesday.
The boy’s father, Lalka, a labourer pedalling the bicycle, sister Asia, 6, and brother Sohail, 2, sitting in the front, escaped with minor injuries. Angered over the three-year-old child’s death, irate locals damaged the lorry and ransacked the school building holding the latter’s management responsible for the accident.
The mob also allegedly manhandled a teacher of the school, Sarita. Condemning the attack on the school building, the local private schools association called for closure of the schools on Thursday.
The labourer started from his house in Marutinagar for Oxford school, some 250 yards away, around 8.30 a.m.
He was half-way through when a lorry and an autorickshaw racing one against the other came in the opposite direction on the narrow road.
“It seems the lorry driver turned right to take over the three-wheeler and hit the bicycle’s handle bar,” the Chatrinaka police said.
Shocked over the accident on the narrow stretch, angry residents attacked the lorry breaking its glasses.
