Management charged with preventing formation of labour union

The Joint Commissioner of Labour, Visakhapatnam has served a show-cause notice under Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 on Aurobindo Pharma Ltd, Pydibheemavaram, Srikakulam district, on receipt of a complaint that they are preventing employees from forming a union and transferring some employees with mala fide intention.

The notice was issued on Monday following tripartite talks in the city. The employees, who sought registration of Aurobindo Pharma Employees’ Union (APEU) as a union in April, 2013 with the initiative of Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU), alleged on Tuesday that the transfer of four employees for their involvement in formation a union and ‘kidnap’ of one of the activists by other employees at the behest of the management. The company, however, denied the charges.

When contacted, a senior official of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd said they were into bulk drug manufacturing from multiple locations and were committed to following established labour practices.

“Some outside elements are trying to create unrest by instigating a section of employees. There is no truth in the allegations,” he said.

The official also said they had not received copy of the show-cause notice. The Labour Department sought explanation in seven days from the date of receipt of notice.
