Warns of tough disciplinary action

GUNTUR: The Congress party is not facing rebels in any of the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC) and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) in the State, said Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, K.Keshava Rao.

At a press conference held here on Tuesday, he said stern disciplinary action would be taken against those proved to be rebels of the Congress.

"The party's disciplinary committee will not hesitate to suspend leaders at any level," he said. In Guntur district, a complaint was lodged against a sitting ZPTC member Kamineni Bhavani Shankar for fielding an independent candidate against party MPTC nominee from Koppuravuru.

He said that there was an overwhelming positive response to the Congress campaign in all the 17 districts he had visited so far. He predicted that the TDP would be reduced to a `single digit' party in each district as far as the elections to the ZPTCs are concerned.

Brushing aside the controversy over bogus voters, he said that after the revision of the voter lists, the increase in the number of voters was only 2.3 per cent.

"Earlier, the number of voters was 5 crores and 23 thousands. After the revision, the numbers have gone up to 5 crores and 32 thousands," Mr. Rao said.

He said it was the TDP that had resorted to large-scale irregularities in getting the voter list prepared.

The Congress had approached the SEC with a complaint of having irregularities with regard to 43,000 votes in the last election.

The TDPs allegations on the bogus votes during Congress regime were not correct, he added.
