Hotels should follow the stipulations: Sarma

Our intention is not to close down businesses: Sarma

More time to be given if hoteliers give an undertaking

HYDERABAD: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner and Special Officer C.V.S.K. Sarma has asserted that there will be no let up in the ongoing exercise to seal hotels and other business establishments violating parking norms.

Dr. Sarma admitted that he was under pressure from the powers that be and his phone has not stopped buzzing ever since the exercise began two days ago.

But, he was not going to give up. “We will only give some more time if the hoteliers give an undertaking that they will abide by the law,” he said.

“We are not against anyone and our intention is not to close down businesses. We are only asking them to follow the stipulations laid down. No business establishments can allow parking on the roadsides affecting traffic movement. I am happy the message has gone across very strongly,” he said.

The Commissioner’s assertion comes in the light of the GHMC buckling under political pressure on Tuesday and allowing two of the noted restaurants in RTC crossroads – ‘Astoria’ and ‘Bawarchi’ to reopen towards the evening after grandly closing them in the afternoon.

“We are going about the job in a very strategic manner. We are clear about our final objective which is to make the traffic flow smoother. We had allowed the hotels to open only after they gave an undertaking that not a single vehicle will be allowed to park outside their premises,” he said.

‘Need for tact’

Dr. Sarma felt that his staff should have been more tactful about the timing of the closures and he was not prepared to put his men under any sort of risk by getting into arguments on the streets. Since such an exercise was never before taken up there were bound to be some problems but was sure of overcoming them.

The GHMC was also willing to give time for age old hotels to find alternative space for parking .
