Casualty at a hospital was from Khammam'

  • Steps being taken to improve sanitation in municipalities
  • Drop in malaria cases in city, says official

    VIJAYAWADA: Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao has said that there have been no cases of dengue fever in Krishna district till now. Addressing a press conference after reviewing the situation in the district here on Monday Mr. Ranga Rao said there was a death due to dengue in a private hospital on Sunday, but the patient -- a woman -- was brought here for treatment from Khammam district.

    `Mandatory'

    The Minister said section 310 of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act made it mandatory for all Government and private hospitals to notify the district health authorities all fever (contagious) cases admitted to their hospital.

    Mr Ranga Rao said steps were being taken to improve the sanitation and control mosquitoes in every municipality. Anti-larva operations would be taken up on a large-scale and chemicals like baytex, pyrethrine and malathion would be spray to control the vector in different stages in its life cycle. The Minister said he had instructed all municipalities to ensure that all wards were cleaned everyday.

    Additional director, Department of Municipal Administration, K. Sudhakar, said very clear instructions had been sent to municipalities. By following these instructions the spread of diseases like dengue and chikungunya could be contained. There would be no fogging because there was a court directive against it.

    Municipal Corporation Health Officer K. S. Karuna Murthy said there had been a drastic decrease in the number of malaria cases in the city. While there had been 5,085 malaria cases from January to September last year, there were only 2,171 cases in the corresponding period this year. All the samples sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, from here had tested negative for chikungunya.

    Municipal Administration Regional Director C.Nagarjuna Rao, Vijayawada Sub-collector Ch.Bhanuprasad, municipal corporation additional commissioner Neelakant and municipal commissioners from different municipalities in the district were present.
