The action of the State police to register a case against S. Nagesh Kumar, Resident Editor (AP), The Hindu, over a report published in the newspaper on September 13 on DGP V. Dinesh Reddy’s meeting with a religious figure Habib Mujtaba Al Aydaroos Baba drew widespread condemnation from netizens.
The reaction on the Facebook page of The Hindu Hyderabad spoke about the brazen use of muscle power by the police, even as the netizens faulted the decision of the cops to file an FIR.
“The DGP should have cleared the air by writing an article in The Hindu or an open letter to all the media houses explaining his visit. There should be open arguments, not use of muscle power,” Nilesh Vijayakumar wrote.
Pattu Rai said: “The age-old game. Hope the rest of media too will stand by you. The public stands by you.”
Mohammed Nisar Ahmed termed the police action “ridiculous”.
Meanwhile, Chandrasekhar wrote: “I support the freedom of the press. Any citizen can meet any godman he wants.
The hype is created by the police by closing the road for traffic, heavy escorts, etc. It got reported. The matter should have left at that. Filing of FIR was unnecessary.”
Syed Fazil Hussain Parvez wrote: “We express our solidarity with the flag-bearer of values and ethics based journalism, The Hindu .”
