43 plays and playlets, verse, social and children’s dramas to be staged

Theatre lovers will have a gala day from Sunday when the curtains go up at Anand Gajapathi Auditorium where 43 plays and playlets, verse, social and children’s dramas, as part of Nandi Natakotsavalu-2012, will be staged for eight days by about 1100 stage artistes. Each day four to seven plays and play lets will be staged from 8.30am to 10pm. The event will come to a close with prize distribution to winners in various categories at Rajiv Sports Stadium at 5p.m. on January 27.

Prior to inauguration of the event by Transport Minister Botcha Satyanarayana, poets, writers, theatre artistes, and members of various cultural organisations will take out a procession at 9 a.m. from Gurajada’s statue at Maharajah’s (Autonomous) College via Gurajada’s House, fort to the auditorium. At 11.30 a.m., Navakranti Cultural Association, Hyderabad, will stage “Bhakta Prahalada” (verse drama) followed by “Kanche” (social drama) by Mekha Arts, Hyderabad, at 3 p.m. In the evening at 6.30, Sri Syamalamba Fine Arts Association, Vizianagaram, will stage “Yamunaacharya” (verse drama).

Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) has taken carried repairs before the event. Representative of ‘Surabhi’ Sankar oversaw arrangements like stage decoration, lighting, settings and curtains. Collector M. Veerabrahmaiah had appointed eight committees like organising committee, stage, reception and auditorium, hospitality and transport, press coordination committee, etc. for smooth conduct of the prestigious event.

The district administration and local municipality have put up welcome arches at entry points to the fort town and illuminated main junctions on roads leading to the venue. Temporary toilets and drinking water kiosks have been arranged for people coming to view performance of artistes on stage. Police made elaborate bandobust arrangements, regulated traffic and earmarked Ayodhya Maidan as parking place for vehicles. Accommodation for visiting artistes has been arranged at Kshatriya Kalyanamandapam and Maharajah’s Government Sanskrit College, both are close to the venue.
