Move to install Rajiv statue to be dropped?
Telugu Desam holds protest demonstration on the issue It snowballs into a major controversy forcing Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to intervene
GUNTUR: After a day of protest demonstrations and cleansing the statue of freedom fighter Konda Venkatappaiah with milk and submission of a memorandum to the District Collector, the TDP on Tuesday demanded the Government to name the centre as Venkatappaiah Chowk.
The issue snowballed into a controversy after a section of Congress leaders tried to install a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the same place where the Traffic Advisory Committee did not permit installation of a statue of Potti Sreeramulu citing hindrance to the smooth flow of traffic in 2003.
The traffic island near the Hindu College in the city initially had the statue of freedom fighter Konda Venkatappaiah, which was later shifted to a nearby place on the recommendations of a study team from Delhi in 1998 to ease traffic flow.
The TDP leaders were now demanding the centre be named `Venkatappaiah Chowk' to honour the great freedom fighter from the district.
There seems to be disagreement even within the Congress as a few leaders were taking it as a `prestige issue'. .
The Chief Minister is believed to have instructed officials to shift the proposed statue of Rajiv Gandhi to a different place. However, the official communication is yet to be received by the corporation officials.
