For the NSS volunteers of Acharya Nagarjuna University, Wednesday will remain a memorable day as they gave a shot at the existing Guinness World Record for the ‘largest barefoot walk.’

Even as the sun was beating down on a warm day, over 7,000 students walked barefoot on the Ring Road stretch between JKC College and Don Bosco School at Chandramouli Nagar. The official figure was exactly 7,050. The existing record was in the name of NSS unit of Palamuru University. The students were batched in groups of 50 and each group was given a tag indicating the number of students in the group.

Vice-Chancellor K. Viyanna Rao, Registrar R.R.L. Kantham led from the front as they walked on the road without footwear. Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Ake Ravikrishna was also present. MLC K.S Lakshmana Rao flagged off the event.

P. Ramachandra Rao, Liaison Officer of NSS, Ramakrishna Youth Officer were present. K. Sumanth Kumar, Programme Coordinator of NSS Cell, said that the walkathon, theme was “Walk for Health-Human Values,’’ was aimed at instilling a sense of pride among NSS volunteers.

The event would be sent to be adjudicated by the Guinness World Records Committee and the final authentication would be sent within a week, Mr. Sumanth Kumar added.
