Action for `crossing all limits of decency and directly intimidating Chair'

HYDERABAD: Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy on Wednesday suspended Telugu Desam member N. Janardhan Reddy from the House for one day for "crossing all the limits of decency and decorum and directly intimidating the Chair."

The usually calm Speaker lost his cool in the morning when the TDLP deputy leader rushed towards the podium in the midst of a debate on remunerative prices for cotton farmers. "Is it the Assembly or a public meeting? Don't you dare dictate terms to me?" the Speaker said.

Asserting that he knew "how to discipline the erring members," Mr. Suresh Reddy faulted Dr. Janardhan Reddy for "threatening the Chair." He said he was totally displeased by the member's behaviour and hence, the disciplinary action.

Trouble began when Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu did not budge to the Speaker's requests to conclude his remarks on the support prices to farmers following which Mr. Suresh Reddy ordered his mike to be cut.

`Suspension unfair'

At this, Mr. Janardhan Reddy rushed towards the podium even as members of other political parties kept watching the proceedings. Legislative Affairs Minister K. Rosaiah immediately moved a motion to suspend the member from the House.

Talking to reporters later, the TDP member said his suspension was unfair and wondered whether there was a ban on raising public issues in the House.
