The Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti(MRPS) staged a dharna here on Thursday demanding hike in the PDS rice quota for BPL families from four kg to 15 kg to get rid of the chronic hunger of the downtrodden sections of people.

Leading the MRPS ''Aakali Kekala Poru Yatra'' to the Prakasam Bhavan here from Markapur, Chirala, Kanigiri, Darsi and Kandukur, among other places in the district, its State general secretary K.Brahmaiah Madiga said the MRPS would chalk out an action plan at its state executive committee meeting at Puttapurthi on June 12 and 13 to intensify its stir to achieve the just demands including amendment to the Constitution to provide for categorisation of SCs.

Formed to spearhead the stir for micro-classification of SCs for the purpose of reservation, the MRPS had broad-based its movement by taking up the cause of children with congenital heart disease, disabled people, old people and widows and succeeded in achieving group insurance scheme and also hike in pension for the infirm, disabled and widows. ''Though the State has brought down the price of four kg of rice supplied to the poor under the PDS to re one, the quantum of rice is hardly enough to meet their needs for a week," he said. “Millions of poor people are not in a position to buy rice from open market for the rest of the month at a very high price of Rs. 40 per kg,” said its State unit spokesman Pilli Manika Rao Madiga.
