Local Member of Parliament Kavuri Sambhasiva Rao on Thursday urged the district administration to commence the works relating to the proposed rail-overbridge (RoB) project in place of a level crossing near Vatluru on the city outskirts. Speaking at a review meeting here, he said the proposal failed to take off even after the Central government had cleared it some five months ago. The government has sanctioned Rs 29 crore for the RoB which intends to reduce journey time from Eluru to

Vijayawada on the Kolkatta-Chennai National Highway-5. The level crossing is the biggest bottleneck for movement of vehicular traffic from Eluru to Vijayawada and its replacement with RoB is a long-felt need.

Srimannarayana, Superintending Engineer, Roads and Buildings department, clarified that they could not commence the RoB works for want of land to be acquired by the Revenue department. Some structures that came in the way of RoB construction were also to be removed in coordination with the Revenue department, he said.

The MP expressed serious anguish over the alleged official apathy in utilizing the MPLADS funds which he has sanctioned for different works. Mr. Rao said he had sanctioned funds from his MPLADS scheme for construction of bus shelters, community halls and drains following requests from the people in his constituency. However, the officials failed to execute those works leading to lapse of the funds on the ground that the contractors were not coming forward to take up them. “It is very unfair on the part of the Engineering officials. If there is no response from contractors for the works of small nature, the department is expected to execute them”, he said.
