HYDERABAD: Ponnam Prabhakar who relinquished the post of AP Markfed chairman on Wednesday, following his recent election to the Lok Sabha from Karimnagar constituency, promised to secure industries and technology from the newly-created Food Processing Ministry in the interests of the farmers of the State.

At a press conference later, Mr. Prabhakar thanked Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy for reposing faith in him . He said, as MP, he would continue to strive for improved performance of government agencies like Markfed.

The MP-elect said he was able to do quite a lot for the welfare of farmers as Markfed chairman. He expressed confidence of putting in the same efforts for securing Central funds for the welfare schemes being implemented by the State government for the uplift of A.P. farmers.

He asserted that the minimum support price of Rs.930 per a quintal of paddy, as against the demand of Rs.1,000, was good enough. On the procurement problems due to lack of godown space in the State, Mr. Prabhakar described it as a temporary phenomenon and a passing phase.
