Lashes out against opposition to widen the regulator

Recounts Rayalaseema's sacrifices for Srisailam projectAll-party meet in Kurnool soon to discuss issue

KURNOOL: Kurnool MP Kotla Jayasurya Prakasa Reddy described the opposition to Pothireddypadu regulator widening proposal as uncalledfor and said the leaders from Telengana and Coastal Andhra should check facts before speaking against it. Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said people of Kurnool had sacrificed a lot for Srisailam project by giving lands. Those displaced could not be rehabilitated fully till now. By virtue of having access to Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam reservoirs, Coastal Andhra and parts of Telengana cultivated three crops in a year.

'No need to object'

"But people or leaders of Rayalaseema never grumbled. Now, the regulator is being widened to utilise surplus water and other regions should not object to it," he said. During the TDP regime, water was released downstream from the dead storage. He said water level should be maintained at 854 ft to ensure water for all projects dependent on Srisailam reservoir. After the AICC plenary, an all-party meeting would be convened here inviting people from all Rayalaseema districts to discuss the issue, the MP said. DCC secretary M. Sudhakarbabu wondered whether Rayalaseema had no right to surplus water in the Krishna. Floor leader in the Zilla Parishad B.Y. Ramaiah urged the Government to plan construction of a weir across the Krishna at Siddeswaram to ensure water to all Rayalaseema projects.
