VISAKHAPATNAM: Welfare pensions have been sanctioned to an additional 6,400 persons in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation limits.
The new pensions for the aged, the disabled and widows will be paid from March. With the latest addition, the total number of pensions being disbursed every month reached 63,000 in the corporation limits, according to Municipal Commissioner B. Sridhar. The total outgo every month towards the pensions is Rs.1.8 crores.
An amount of Rs.1.22 crores has been released towards “Pavala” (three per cent) interest to 3,446 self-help groups. The State Government has issued orders releasing the money due till September, 2008, to 29 banks.
Mr. Sridhar on Friday made a visit to Kanakaladibba where residents complained about inadequate water supply and street lighting. He directed the officials either to deepen the bore well or set up a pubic tap. The present tanker will be replaced with a 1,000 litre tanker. A high mast light will be arranged in the locality.
Mr. Sridhar instructed officials to remove the kiosks that were set up encroaching on the Mylapore hill stream (gedda).
He later visited the garbage transfer station. Notices should be issued to the agency defaulting on timely supply of dumper places and the tender cancelled.
