MCE fails to check pig menace: corporator
People living in the open seek houses
ELURU: A host of problems greeted MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas (Nani) of the Congress as he launch a padayatra on Wednesday.
He embarked upon the programme in the scorching sun to receive feedback on the fate of promises he had made to different sections of people. Mr. Nani set out for the padayatra after offering prayers at the Kanaka Durga temple under 22nd division. Problems like shortage of drinking water, housing, street lighting and the menace of pigs figured during the programme. TDP corporator from 23rd division Yadlapalli Rama Devi highlighted the alleged failure of the authorities of the Municipal Corporation of Eluru (MCE) in combating the pig menace. The MCE threw up its hands saying that lack of bullets hampered its programme to shoot the pigs. As a result, pigs were barging into the houses in some areas, posing a serious threat to public health, she said. The MLA had an encounter with several poor families who made the open place under an over-bridge a shelter for a long time. Mr. Nani happened to be a mute witness to the fact that the ambitious Indiramma programme, launched by the State government with a mission to see that no family was left without a house in urban areas, was yet to reach these hapless families. They all made a passionate plea to the MLA to provide them with permanent houses.
For the residents of Postal Colony, however, it was a promise that was fulfilled with regard to installing a public tap in the Vijaya Gardens area. He formally inaugurated a tap in the area in line with the promise he made to the locals during the previous Praja Patham programme. He laid a foundation stone for provision of piped water to the colony, which received water by tankers till date. He said the drinking water problem in the area would be solved permanently once the laying of pipelines was completed.
