‘RUB failed to serve purpose’
The RUB is turning into a death-trap during rainy season
It was designed during the TDP regime
ELURU: MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas (Nani) on Thursday urged authorities of the Municipal Corporation of Eluru (MCE) to make a proposal for construction of a flyover as a substitute to the present rail-under bridge (RUB) near Srinivasa Mahal.
The MLA was forced to make a plea to this effect in the wake of a hue and cry raised by the people over the failure of the RUB in fulfilling its purpose of mitigating the traffic problem.
The RUB, with a depth of 50 ft, was turning into a virtual death-trap as it would become a huge pool of water during the rainy season. A polytechnic student and another unidentified person drowned in the canal-like RUB on two different occasions. The bridge, designed during the TDP regime following an initiative of the then MLA, became a source of political controversy also.
The BJP and the CPI (M) staged demonstrations at the RUB demanding its closure and action against those who designed the bridge.
The MLA, who inspected the RUB earlier in the day, said the traffic problem was going out of control whenever it rained due to the closure of the RUB for traffic.
Traffic problem was growing manifold on the roads leading to Powerpet railway station from the Fire Station Centre and the GNT Road via the over bridge at Seerla Bramhaiah petrol bunk , Mr. Nani said. Construction of a flyover in place of the RUB would offer lasting solution, he added.
