HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party has charged the Government with favouring defaulting mining companies and allowing them to mine iron ore and valuable granite indiscriminately over and above the allotted areas.
At a press conference, the TDP spokesman, M. V. Mysoora Reddy and MLA, Umamaheswara Rao said a top official of the mining department was behind the issue of mining leases to such questionable companies.
These questionable companies included Obulapuram Mining Company which had blasted an ancient Sunkulamma temple not heeding to the Archaeology department’s order for its protection, they said.
The Obulapuram Mining Company had mined iron ore over and above the area for which it was holding the lease in Anantapur.
The lease was given without permission from the Centre. The party Members of Legislative Assembly were visiting the place tomorrow.
Dr. Mysoora Reddy alleged that other companies like Midwest, Pallavi and Gimpex were granted leases though they have defaulted in payment of royalty to the Government.
Dr. Reddy wondered why the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) was entering Memorandum of Understandings with such companies when it could take up mining projects on its own, fetching revenue for the Government.
He further added “The Government has failed to protect and capitalise on the mineral wealth of the State and leasing it away to private parties for a song.”
