Mild tension prevailed in Attipelly village near Medchal on city outskirts on Thursday following mistaken reports that a statue of B.R. Ambedkar was damaged.

Senior police officers of Cyberabad rushed to the village to take stock of the situation after the vandalisation of Ambedkar statues in East Godavari district triggered widespread protests.

False reports

Inquiries, however, revealed the reports of damage to the statue at Attipelly were false. Index finger of the statue broke three months ago while placing garlands on it. “Some persons who noticed this for the first time tipped off a Telugu news channel which ran scrolls stating that the idol was damaged,” police said. Though the channel later withdrew the report, a large number of people began gathering.

Officials of the Revenue and Police Department, including Balanagar DCP, P. Pramod Kumar, went there to ascertain facts only to learn the report was baseless.
