With the schools remaining closed for the last three days due to ‘Samaikyandhra’ agitations, the kitchen has stopped working and about 2.4 lakh students, who take the Mid Day Meals (MDM) in government schools are left high and dry.

The educational institutions declared holidays due to the ongoing 72-hour bandh and some children, who got used to the meals while their parents are away on work, are forced to have food at homes alone.

According to Education Department authorities, as many as 3.20 lakh students are studying in the 3,300 government-run elementary, upper primary, and high schools and aided schools in the district.

Due to poverty, some children are solely dependent on mid-day meal, but the agitation has deprived them of that.

“I observed that many students wait for the lunch bell and on holidays parents are forced to make alternative arrangement if they are out on work,” says Parvathi, a teacher of a government elementary school.
