VISAKHAPATNAM: A meeting was organised on Thursday on the issue of paying compensation and other related issues for those affected by the Bus Rapid Transit System being taken up on two corridors under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission at a cost of Rs. 452.93 crores.
Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao, MLAs Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao, Tainala Vijay Kumar, V.Ramakrishna Babu, P.Ramesh Babu and M. Vijay Prasad, Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai and Municipal Commissioner B. Sridhar and corporators of the areas affected participated.
The meeting broadly agreed to consider the plea that those evicted from encroachments should be provided houses if they come under below poverty line category.
The other contentious issue was the demand that compensation be paid for the land on the structures lost. However, officials maintained that only government scheduled rate would be paid. For the land transferable development rights (TDR) will be given.
Also, those who lost kiosks etc would be provided alternative to eke out a living.
