Stressing the need for strong initiative from the media to make the Right to Information (RTI) Act more useful to the public, Information Commissioner P. Vijaya Babu on Saturday observed that some confusion was prevailing over the RTI Act among the officials, even after seven years of its promulgation.

Addressing the media here, Mr. Vijaya Babu wanted the officials to note that providing information to the public was also one among their primary duties. He said that proper implementation of the Act would bring many changes in society and result in an improvement of the living conditions of the poor.

Mr. Vijaya Babu said the implementation of the Act was far better in East Godavari district. He advised the officials to listen to the complaints and grievances of the public patiently, so that they could be taken into confidence by people. It would help improve the administration, he said.

Joint Collector A. Babu said that the district was soon going to launch e-office project, under which over 25lakh pages of data for the last 40 years would be digitized and kept available to the public through touch screen kiosks. Deputy Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Pousami Basu and other officials were present. Earlier in the day, Mr. Vijaya Babu convened a review meeting with the officials on the implementation of the Act.
