Minister for Handloom and Textiles, P. Shanker Rao has listed the measures his Ministry was pursuing to provide succour to the handloom weavers in the State in the wake mounting debts and recurring natural calamities.
Talking to media persons after a review meeting with officials of the department, he said the department was contemplating ensuring an additional income of Rs.400 to Rs.500 each to the affected handloom workers every month, besides providing mid-day meal to their families and free milk to children below three years age.
As for other welfare measures, he said all government departments were being persuaded to buy only the products made by the weavers' cooperative societies. Steps were also afoot to get the uniforms stitched using the clothes produced by the handloom weavers. Mr. Shanker Rao also gave details of the handloom weavers' debts waiting to be written off after due processing.
