Kakinada: The Medical Council of India has increased the number of PG seats in Rangaraya Medical College (RMC) by 32 taking the total to 112 from 80 across 29 branches of medicine and surgery.

The seat strength in 11 Government medical colleges in the State has gone up to about 500, said RMC Principal Dr. R Pratap.

The number of seats in MD- General Medicine is higher by 6, MD-Pediatrics and MS Orthopedics 3 each, MD- Biochemistry, Pathology,

Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine and Anesthesia and MS- ENT, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Ophthalmology two each and MD- Pharmacology and Pulmonary Medicine one each.

Funds sought

Dr. Pratap said the State Government was requested to grant funds for purchasing equipment (estimated to cost Rs 1 crore) for Biochemistry and Microbiology Departments or allow the College Development Society to spend from its resources. Provision of audio-visual devices and LCD monitors in all the classrooms was underway.

The augmented seat strength would meet the increasing requirement of post-graduates. As regards the faculty position,

Dr. Pratap said the sanctioned numbers of professor, associate professor and assistant professor posts were 59, 44 and 156.


The number of vacancies are 13, 10 and 34 respectively. The Government was expected to fill the posts sooner than later.

Support was sought for creation of other infrastructure.
