London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom tops the list of big names who will be in action when Hyderabad hosts the Senior National Boxing Championship at the Lal Bahadur Stadium this month-end. This should generate lot of interest given the fact that the ace woman boxer from Manipur on her last visit to the city had expressed a strong desire to set up a full-fledged boxing academy here and is a big hit in the sports fraternity.
“No doubt, 29-year-old five-time world champion Mary Kom will be the biggest star attraction for obvious reasons the most important being she is a household name already in Indian sport along with ace shuttler Saina Nehwal as far as women athletes are concerned,” says SAAP boxing coach Omkar Yadav, one of the technical officials to be involved in the meet.
With State Minister Danam Nagender, who is also president of AP Boxing Association, taking personal interest in ensuring that the entire event will be a memorable one by preferring the open playfield at the L.B. Stadium to the Gachibowli or the Yousufguda Indoor Stadium with the specific intent of luring more spectators to the sport, the event is tipped to be a big success.
Rs. 1 crore budget
According to rough estimates, the organisers are going ahead with a budget of more than Rs. 1 crore for the biggest boxing event in the city after a long time.
“We are confident that the big stars of Indian boxing including Vijender Singh, Vikas Kishan, Shiv Thapa will be here. We are taking the event seriously to showcase our organisational skills and also give the sport the much desired fillip,” says one of the key officials involved in the meet.
“The reason why we chose to have it in the open is to ensure that bigger crowds enjoy the ambience under lights,” says another official, referring to the success of the Indian style wrestling nationals held at the same venue a few months ago which drew huge response from the fans.
The AP Boxing Association has already drawn a schedule of selections and many contenders from the State are already training at different venues to earn the right to challenge the best from across the country.
