Maoist commander of Indervelli dalam in Adilabad, Gundarapu Kistakka, alias Lalitha, surrendered herself to the district police on Thursday causing great loss to the underground movement in Adilabad.
Involved in four exchanges of fire between 2005 and 2009, she cited ill health and loss of support in public as the reasons for surrender.
Producing Kistakka at a press conference, Adilabad Superintendent of Police S. Tripathi said she joined the Mangi dalam of Maoists in 2004 following her divorce and a quarrel with her brother.
She later worked in Mangi dalam and was elevated as Indervelli dalam commander in May 2011.
She was suffering from ill-health for the past one year and had requested her leaders for permission to surrender. After being initially refused permission by Gundeti Shankar alias Sheshanna, the district committee secretary, she was allowed to surrender by Koyyada Sambaiah alias Azad, the divisional committee secretary.
Mr. Tripathi said she carries a reward of Rs. 20,000 as she is on record as dalam member. However, in view of her elevation as dalam commander, the government will be urged to give her commensurate reward money, he added.
