ONGOLE: A person set fire to his hut in Pragathi Colony here on Thursday in a bid to settle scores with his wife. Soon the fire ravaged the entire colony, reducing some 70 huts to ashes and rendering many families homeless.
The police registered a case of arson against the person Sugali Seenu, who is at large.
Several families encroached upon the land abutting south bypass road and raised huts and named the slum as Pragathi Colony.
Seenu, who belongs to the nearby Mungamur village, married Nagendram, whose parents live in Pragathi Colony. They belong to Yerukala community and live by rearing pigs.
Following a dispute, Nagendram deserted Seenu and came to live with her parents in Pragati Colony. Seenu suspected that his wife indulged in prostitution in the hut belonging to her parents.
He allegedly set fire to the hut when the inmates were away.
The fire soon spread to the adjacent huts. A gas cylinder in one of the huts exploded which helped the fire to spread faster.
Fire tenders rushed to the place and brought the flames under control. Revenue officials are making arrangements to provide food to the families that were rendered homeless.
Some families, which were above poverty line, lost their furniture and meagre savings.
